Porter, Oxford County, Maine

Granted Sept. 24, 1793, to Jeremiah Hill and Aaron Porter, both of Biddeford, Thomas Cutts, Nathaniel Scammon, Seth Storer, James Coffin, all of Pepperellborough, Caleb Emery and William Emery, both of Sanford, and Nathaniel Merrill of Fryeburg. It was an 18,600 acre township. An earlier grant was made, Nov. 20, 1787 (conveyed Jan. 27, 1789), to Timothy Cutler, as compensation for another tract of which he was disseized [Massachusetts Deeds, 6:341]. This was called Cutler's Upper Grant, and measured 3,800 acres. A second tract was granted to Cutler the same day, located in what became Hiram.

Surveyed by Samuel Titcomb, Nov. 1789, at the expense of Jeremiah Hill, Caleb Emery, and associates [Land Office Plans, 1:6]. Resurveyed by John Wingate in 1793, to show proprietors' lots. Cutler's Upper Grant was surveyed by Bracey Banks in 1788 [Land Office Plans, 2:7 (see also the plan made by Nathaniel Merrill from this survey in 1795 [21:12])].

First known as Porterfield Township.

Settled in 1781 by Meshach Libby, joined soon after by his father John and brother Stephen Libby.

First organized as Porterfield Plantation in 1802.

Incorporated Feb. 20, 1807, by petition dated Jan. 8, 1806. The northern part of the plantation—including that part known as Cutler's Upper Grant—was set off to Brownfield the same day. Porter Meeting House in 1936
