1837 Surplus Revenue Census
A federal budget surplus was distributed to the states in 1837, and in Maine was distributed to individual towns. To this end, a special census was taken to enumerate the residents of each town and township in Maine on the first of March, 1837. Each town was allowed to decide how the money would be spent; many chose to distribute it on the basis of the special census. The census schedules of most Maine towns have been lost, but those of unincorporated townships were kept by the state and have survived. Transcriptions of extant schedules may be found at Special Maine 1837 Census.

1 Comments:
At Oxford Triangle the 1890 census was added for some of the towns in northen Oxford County. Also all the people from the census are linked together. So by asking for "LITTLEHALE" it will show records from each census where they have been added. If a woman's maiden name was Littlehale and the census line has been linked to the pedigree file they will also be selected from the census records.
